A police complaint was filed on Saturday by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) against a female Instagram influencer named Archana Makwana for practicing yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib, often referred to as the Golden Temple Amritsar. Images of yoga poses by Instagram influencer Archana Makwana went viral. She has expressed regret and issued a public apology amidst the outrage.

The woman is a yoga practitioner named Archana Makwana. On June 21, which is International Yoga Day, she travelled to Delhi to accept an award and to practice yoga on the Golden Temple grounds.

Archana Makwana who is a Dalit Hindu and did yoga at Sri Darbar Sahib in Amritsar has apologized for her actions. She stated that she was unaware of the rules and promised not to repeat the mistake and also requested people to forgive her.

The SGPC has prosecuted three “sewadars,” or workers, for neglecting their duties in the Darbar Sahib “Parikrama” by permitting the woman to practice yoga on June 21, the International Day of Yoga.

The ‘Parikrama’ is a marble pathway that pilgrims can stroll around while making their respects and giving prayers.

SGPC President Harjinder Singh Dhami reminded the’sangat’ that Sachkhand Sri Harmandir Sahib is revered by the whole Sikh community and that pilgrims from all nations and religions come here to offer reverent prayers.

The sewadars were questioned by an inquiry committee set up by the SGPC for neglecting their duties.

Archana Makwana’s apology

Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, General Manager of Golden Temple, stated that Archana Makwana had shared her pictures on social media. Makwana deleted the images and videos from her Instagram account in the midst of the storm. Archana Makwana apologized for her actions in an Instagram story on Saturday, stating that she didn’t mean to offend anyone’s religious beliefs.

“I was unaware that practising yoga in the Gurdwara Sahib premises could be offensive to some as I was just paying my respect to him and didn’t mean any harm to anyone,” Makwana said.

“After verifying through the CCTV cameras, it was found that she performed yoga exercises at 7.04 a.m. after entering the premises at 6.57 a.m. She spent almost an hour in the ‘Parikrama’ but she had not paid a reverence during her stay,” he added.
