Kiran Pahal bio

Kiran Pahal is an upcoming Indian sprinter who hails from a small village called Ganaur in the Sonepat district, Haryana. She is currently just 24 years old and grew up in poverty with her family undergoing financial struggles.

Her father was a munshi named Om Prakash, who worked at a Tehsil court and was the family’s sole breadwinner. However, he tragically passed away in 2022 following a long battle with a lung problem. Meanwhile, her mother, Maya Devi, is a homemaker. Just one month after her dad’s passing Kiran won the 400m gold at the Inter-State Athletics in 2022 with an impressive time of 51.84 seconds.

Coach

Kiran Pahal was initially coached by Rohtas Siwach and now trains under Ashish Singh Chhikara. Rohtas is a renowned figure in Indian athletics but had a controversial past due to doping scandals involving two of his athletes, Anjali Devi and Himani Chandel.

Career and achievements

Despite facing several hardships and financial struggles, Kiran Pahal dedicated herself to athletics. She often lacked the basic resources for training and had to make do without proper kits or shoes. Aside from her athletics career, she was an employee with the Indian Railways, where she earned around Rs. 25,000 per month. However, most of her income went towards supporting her family.

As such, she often struggled to afford any kind of essential athletic gear. Despite her struggles, she experienced a lot of help particularly from fellow athlete Hima Das who often gave her kit, shoes, spikes, and financial support. Kiran started participating in the national camp back in 2019 up until 2021.

Kiran is currently making headlines for her recent triumph in Panchkula at 63rd National Inter-State Senior Athletics Championship. She finished far ahead of her competitors with a timing of 50.95 seconds. Gujarat’s Devy Aniba Zala came in second place with a time of 53.44 seconds while Kerala’s Sneha K finished third at 53.51 seconds. Just eight months ago Kiran competed at the 62nd National Open Athletics Championships, finishing with a time of 56.03 seconds.

Despite her recent triumph Kiran has been in and out of the national camp due to injuries and has had inconsistent performances. As such, these disruptions could hinder her chances of making the relay team for the upcoming Paris Olympics 2024. This is because the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) generally prioritizes national camp players to avoid doping risks.
