Carli Lloyd blocks accounts on Twitter/X after comparing Christian Pulisic to Lionel Messi during Copa America coverage

A video of Carli Lloyd comparing Christian Pulisic to Lionel Messi has gone viral

Copa America has finally unveiled its curtains with Argentina vs Canada. However, football fans are currently busy criticizing a commentator Carli Lloyd as they have flooded the X/Twitter with angry tweets.

Don’t know why? fret not, we’ve got you covered!

The Euro and Copa America tournaments are a blessing for sports fans, offering excitement during the typically dull summer months after the NBA and NHL playoffs end and before football season begins.

However, American soccer fans face a downside as Fox Sports holds the broadcast rights for both Euro 2024 and Copa America 2024, and their coverage has been disastrous so far.

Fox Sports has sublicensed several games to the subscription-based Fubo, which doesn’t even provide a scorebug for those matches. To make matters worse, viewers are subjected to commentators like Alexi Lalas and Carli Lloyd.

What Did Carli Lloyd Say?

On the first night of Copa America coverage, Lloyd made a baffling comment on the pregame show about Christian Pulisic “coming up” as the next best player in the world after Lionel Messi and Jude Bellingham.

“There’s nobody like [Lionel] Messi. And I don’t think that there ever will be somebody like Messi,” Lloyd began. So far, so good.
“It’s a generational talent. It’s like Maradona.” Still on track, what’s the problem?

“And then Messi has just had that crown. But there’s other players; Jude Bellingham, Pulisic’s [25 years old] coming up,” which made fans go crazy as they took the matter on social media to criticize Lloyd.

Fans Reaction

“I still can’t believe that Carli Lloyd said Christian Pulisic is one of the best players in the world. Crap like this is why people don’t take Americans seriously in this sport,” lamented one soccer fan.

Another one added, “Comparing Pulisic to likes of Messi is ridiculous but he shouldn’t even be in the Bellingham/Musiala/Vinicius conversation”

Aside from the fact that Lloyd grouped Pulisic, a fine player in his own right with two of the greatest players ever, she also failed to mention Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland, and Vinicius Jr., who, alongside Bellingham, are widely regarded as the next contenders for the title of “best player in the world.”

Fox Sports didn’t stop there with their blunders. Former England and Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge grew visibly exasperated by Lalas, who was loudly ranting about England with little substance.

Adding to the dismay over Fox Soccer’s coverage of the Euros and Copa America, they will also be the broadcaster for the World Cup in 2026, set to take place in North America with the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
